Google saved a life -- KIND ADVICE.

An Australian journalist kidnapped in Iraq was freed after his captors checked the popular internet search engine Google to confirm his identity.
... His executive producer at Australia's SBS network, Mike Carey, said Google probably saved freelance journalist Martinkus.

"They Googled him and then went onto a web site - either his own or his book publisher's web site, I don't know which one - and saw that he was who he was, and that was instrumental in letting him go, I think, or swinging their decision," he told AP news agency.

---- NOW PLEASE HAVE YOUR NAME SEARCHABLE IN GOOGLE OR YAHOO (THEY MAY USE YAHOO, TOO) TO SAFEGUARD YOUR LIFE. HOWEVER, YOU HAVE TO SEO YOUR SITE TO MAKE YOUR NAME ON THE TOP. TERRORISTS WON'T HAVE MUCH PATIENCE TO GO OVER 10 PAGES.

Whereas Yahoo! or MSN would have surely pulled up a page about fruit flies instead. Gimme a break - I'm tired of stories like this that are blatantly mis-representing GG as some great, benevolent benefactor. The benefactor here is search - Internet, web search - as a whole industry. Just because I used 3M brand gauze to sow up a wound doesn't mean 3M saved the life of the patient, it means gauze and medical knowledge and the forward progress of humanity did.

I think its somewhat exploitative to have Google or anyone else saying that their specific company saved his life... It's false advertising.

G may have saved my life today, because I was inside checking my backlinks*, whereas I could have been run over by a bus had I gone outside

Thanks callback for sharing the funny stuff.

Thats classic...next time someone asks how to search more than 1000 results in Google I will tell them "Even terrorists don't go past 10 pages"

I read this article yesterday and just thought it was stupid. Newspapers seem to love this kind of story but it is just a waste of ink. Randfish said it best that it could have been any search engine.

Interesting. I just checked. My name, which is pretty common, is #1 at Google and #2 at MSN and Yahoo and I haven't even tried to SEO my personal page.

However, I really don't plan to go to a place where I have to worry about such things.

Like the guy 'saved' didn't know his own web page (or publishers) address? "hey, look me up on google"?

Wouldn't do me much good. I'd start beating one of them until another shot me, so my capture wouldn't last long enough for one of them to make it to a computer.

This is funny, I bet pop-ups really piss them off.
