Google s*ite maps.

CAn someone offer me a bit of advice here please. I have created an xml sitemap using an online tool. Ive uploaded it to my server and (I think) I have told google where it lives. Ive been looking on the google site and it says if you verify site ownership they will give you some stats on your site and report any problems. The trouble is it doesnt appear to explain anywhere how to verify the site.

Can someone tell me how to verify and is it worthwhile doing so ?

Hi,

Google sitemaps will verify it for you, once you have submitted it... when did you submit your sitemap?

upload a blank html file called (something like this)

Thankyou for that. I have now verified.

What benefits do I get from this ?

Only info I can understand is that the bot last visited on 26th June and that only my home page is listed.

There is a waelth of information provided by Google XML sitemaps.

Check the crawl stats, it will tell you if you have any pages that it can't find.

It tells you what anchor text is in links coming to your site, what keywords in finds on your site etc, there is lots of very useful info on there.

Read up on the Google site about it, google search for it or there is a tutorial on Google XML Sitemaps on my SEO web site.

To continue the questions -

Are there any benefits of XML over TXT or vice-versa? I have multiple sites and I have included only TXT file.
