I would think any company that employs 1500 people would be doing more than automation. The algo is automatic but Google never said they didnt scan their index for offending websites by hand.

pk, im sure the 1500 people are not all sitting around surfing the web all day, most would have standard day to day jobs to do, like monitoring servers etc.. , administration, tech support.... theres probably a lot of other jobs to do around the googleplex too.

Besides, even if they didnt manually remove, their not really obliged to, its in their 'terms of service' that google cannot be held responsible for the content of the sites in its index.

Never said that but I doubt it's all or even 50% maintenance. I saw a "help wanted" for a tech and funny thing is that most of them require 1 or 2 people to take care of an entire state. Most server can stay online for large amount of time without problems (OS specific of course......damn you NT ;)) and we're talking about 450 days solid. The upkeep is not the deal.

So 50 to 100 techs for the USA. (75 as an average)
10 per Google domain (.ca, .uk, etc - 198 so far) some that are so close that they are serviced by the same crew (10 * 198 divided by 5 for proximity = 396)
Gmail only had about 5 people working on the GUI, 20 for programmers or so. (25 guesstimation)
20 other services at about 5 person crew each = 100

Thats so far only 596 people out of 1500 and I'm being very compensative with the numbers. I work for an online business and we get ALOT done with very limited numbers and since Google has a VERY non existant support line it' doubtfull the rest are "call centers" of anykind.

I's understand if it was 1 tech per PC but it's not. The numbers would make sense than but they dont when you number crunch

I'm sure I'm missing alot like AdWords team and Adsense so everyone feel free to share other departments I know I've missed.

    Take care

    googleplex events organiser, beer runners,

i wonder if theyd class their security for their datacenters as employees.? Investment advisors, Accountants, there are so many possibilities, its hard to know exactly what goes on there.
Im sure Page and Brin would have personal advisors for investments, and now that theyve gone public, they would also have a board of directors, supervisors.. theyve probably got some shareholders also that theyd class as employees, in-house solicitors, I guess it all depends on their definition of an employee too.

Thats still not many of the 1500 taken care of but im sure there are a lot that we havent thought of.
