Google new "unnatural links report" in webmaster tools.

I read recently Google has added an "unnatural links" report in webmaster tools. I would be really interested to see what one of these reports looks like and how in the hell Google will flag a link as unnatural or natural plus if they will do anything about it in their report to the site owner? Thoughts...and comments or sample reports are welcome...

I'm interested as well. I heard Matt Cutts mentioning some of these things last month, but I can't wait to start digging in. If someone has direct experience with one of these reports please report back.

I am guessing we will see a lot of people posting on here before too long with questions like, "How come google says my links are unnatural" and "Why are they saying I am cloaking"

I donít think there is anything new here, just Google will notify you if your site gets penalized for cross linking, selling links, and excessive reciprocal links.

I agree that Google should notify people for doing this as itís more aimed towards new people practicing SEO that donít know itís wrong.

Well what I think what is different is the fact that they now will go more in depth as to what the issue was and what they have found. Check this out: http://www.seroundtable.com/google-unnatural-links-warnings-12761.html

    Fourgee,

I'll take your word for it, but that post is only talking about the notifications. Maybe i'm missing something though.

If google wants to find unnatural links and punish the sites, 90 percent of shopping sites will be punished because they all pay for a good portion of incoming links ads and etc. I love how google scares people, and at the same time all the huge sites buy a ****load of incoming links get PR5-6 and rank #1 for keyword and nothing happens to them

How will they be doing this in WMT? Will they simply be sending a message to you or will they be adding a new tab/link in WMT?

I'm guessing this will be more aimed at poor link exchanges and buying links more then anything, what do others think will be the main type of link google hit with this?

5 years ago I would of agreed with you. Now you have to buy links very well for that kind of success.

I'm surprised that Google would do this. I would think that this will help the people who are using blackhat measures.

Let's say I have a bunch of manipulative link building tactics. I check out my GWT and I can see which tactics Google is on to. But, I also see that Google didn't catch on to certain ones. So, then I just do more of that.

Won't this just make for smarter blackhats?

Maybe google wants less spam on the web.
Matt talked a lot about virtual blight over a year ago, and in 2010 it increased tremendously. Creating a forum profile just for a link etc.

So when is this suppose to be implemented? Any other details of how to view/access this information via GWT?

Doc, I agree with you on this. It seems like a doubled edged sword.

According to a link post above it was implemented in December so its already in action, I guess we must all be quite good link builders as we only just found out about it and have no messages in GWT lol

That's some good points Doc, but I'm sure google will have set something in motion to combat this, or maybe that's the reason for doing it, to make people (the blackhat noobies) work more on the blackhat bits google dont notice/know so much about so they can catch em at that and start to combat more blackhat!

Interesting, I did a search to see how this would be communicated and here's what I found:

    http://www.google.com/support/forum/...88cc8bac&hl=en

Dear site owner or webmaster of bfenthusiasts.com,

While we were indexing your webpages, we detected that some of your pages were using techniques that are outside our quality guidelines, which can be found here: http://www.google.com/support/webmas...er=35769&hl=en. This appears to be because your site has been modified by a third party. Typically, the offending party gains access to an insecure directory that has open permissions. Many times, they will upload files or modify existing ones, which then show up as spam in our index.

We detected cloaking on your site and suspect this is the cause. For example at http://forums.bfenthusiasts.com/ we found:

racially online phentermine reviews racially biconvex Madames confuser Alberich adipex jackson ms guy Madames earls adipex uk buy biconvex confuser bewailing order adipex phentermine breath Alberich Eastwick sheik buttocks ambien 20mg dosage Madames bewailing bloated bowl diazepam vs xanax Steven occupies diligent penguin valium dosage iv confuser sniffed bowl monotonicity factual valium drug effects ambien cr bluelight Alberich sheik lorazepam od . Chariots adipex rx bewailing klonopin

For more information about what cloaking is, visit http://www.google.com/support/webmas...er=66355&hl=en.

In order to preserve the quality of our search engine, pages from bfenthusiasts.com are scheduled to be removed temporarily from our search results for at least 30 days.

We would prefer to keep your pages in Google's index. If you wish to be reconsidered, please correct or remove all pages (may not be limited to the examples provided) that are outside our quality guidelines. One potential remedy is to contact your web host technical support for assistance. For more information about security for webmasters, see http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...-now-what.html. When such changes have been made, please visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/to...deration?hl=en to learn more and submit your site for reconsideration.

    Sincerely, Google Search Quality Team

Note: if you have an account in Google's Webmaster Tools, you can verify the authenticity of this message by logging into https://www.google.com/webmasters/to...overview?hl=en and going to the Message Center.
    Very good on Google's part!

PS. One more article I found interesting and am currently reading: http://www.ditii.com/2011/01/06/goog...-and-cloaking/

PPS. Does this conflict our theory that links to your site CANNOT hurt you??
