Google indexing site in http and https

For some time, I've seen the https version of the index for one of my sites was indexed in Google. Last week I noticed Google had started indexing other pages in https, and now today I see a much larger section of the site being has been picked up and indexed in https, URL only listings.

Will this eventually correct itself? Can I safely put different versions of robots.txt in different roots to try and stop this, or what methods can I implement to fix this and avoid potential duplicate content penalties?

Did you change your index before? Not sure I folllow. If so, I'd let it naturally correct itself.

I never changed anything major on the site. The single index page I had seen indexed as both http and https for quite a while and I never thought much of it. Now i see Googlebot has crawled and indexed the https versions of all kinds of content and product category pages (which were already normally indexed).

This type of double indexing http/https is something I have never seen on any of my sites before and I'm concerned it could potentially hurt the regular http listings.

I don't think you can get penalised for this (or you shouldn't). https is just the protocol used to access a resource. The search engine will know (or should know) it's the same site, but it's just accessed it through a secure connection.
