Google envy?
I have just switched over to Joomla as per my web person's request and have implemented as many of the search friendly characteristics as I have read about into my my site. However, I am seeing no movement in my placement for Google, even after having added new keyword rich content.
I know that Google has changed it's algorithm, which may account for the sudden slippage in place. However, I would like to know if there is anything else of which I should be aware.
If anyone could take a look at the site and give me a few pointers, I would be very appreciative. The site is:

Thanks for the response. Initially, I sent out so many link solicitations that I thought I was going to go blind. There seems to be a catch 22 relationship between having the kind of page rating conducive to having people reciprocate and getting that ranking to begin with without the back links (I learned them as reciprocated links-same thing I assume)
I spoke to someone who told me that the importance of backlinking had faded since search engines had begun to value content more.
After a lot of nothing and that news I let them go.
Will resume the search for reciprocity but it was a fruitless one before.
Thanks for your advice again.

Placement
Previously, I had been ranking around the 49th page or so. I was posting content everyday. (between 500 to 1500 words of keyword rich text) This slowly was increasing my rating. I let it go for a while while my webguy was implementing some of the changes. When I came back, either because of the google change in algo or the drop off in content adding, I dropped to the 90th page. I have begun to add again and am now up to the 85th page. Is is always this slow?
Also, I have been looking at my back links. There were actually none when I looked through the google back link checker. I think that this, as you said, is definitely one of the major reasons that I am not seeing as much out of my content increase.
Also, during my absence my web forums began to be used for a lot of adult content trading. I closed them down, which I imagine resulted in a fall in the related traffic and contributed to the slippage.

Finaly, just an aside, I was just pondering this whole situation and how much I've had to learn in such a short time. My question pertains to my website and whether it was at all a good investment.
The cost has been, up until now, $1,500 for the whole site revision to it's current format as well as the much more scaled down version (around 10 pages) initially. Is this in line with market rate?
Also, I have considered launching a spanish language forum designed to help both graduate and undergraduate students of Spanish. This would include help with whatever questions they might have about grammar and language. It would also help with minor translation of their travel documents or any other material (under 300 wds) free of charge.
I am doing this in the interest of making the site more "useful" and encourage back links. I will post the forum at university language websites and so forth. Good idea or no?

I think the forum addition is a great idea and a useful one as well. If I may make one recommendation, as an undergraduate student who speaks spanish quite well (if I do say so myself), I've noticed that there is a lot of disinterest among students- even majors, in pursuing academic-related activities outside the classroom. However, I've seen an extraordinary eagerness among students who have studied abroad to communicate with others who have done the same, and especially to communicate with students from those countries. I think a forum section for that specifically would attract a lot more users than simply a forum for spanish students.
As for your site, it's hard to say unequivocally that backlinks are your only problem. Off-hand, you may want to look into some content additions and/or reshuffling to jazz the site up. It's not sticky enough. It's just a backbone and a lot of text. Also, I don't have time to do a competitor analysis but I'd hazard a guess that the translation market is quite competitive. You probably ought to consider marketing schemes beyond optimization, provided the return on investment prospects are good. That said, backlinks are your way forward, at least for now.
As this thread may get lost in the forum pages, you can also feel free to PM me if need be.

Listen to MABDesign and get backlinks.
Also use social networking to broadcast the helpful articles that you're writing. Build and push your linkbait.
The site could use a lot of work still. It's a shame that a lot of your keywords are built into the image header. That could be put to better use.
Your title could be shorter. Why not build a seperate set of pages in spanish and cut your title in two. That way you can push both languages to different audiences. It'll take twice the work, but if they're on the same website, you'll be doing your site a big favor. Just my opinion.

I have been advised to revise the order of certain things to make the site more "sticky". (I think this means more attractive to the spiders and or potential viewers) So that will be next.
Thanks again for your input. It has been very useful.

title and translationof site
Yes, I have thought about doing that phase when I have settled all of the site content and organization issues. I don't want to make all of my revisions twice. I think that the titles are my next target along with the back links.
Thanks for your advice,
Maurice
