Google Bowling Update
Ok so I've got 44 sites up and running now. Grand total of approximately 150-200,000 pages. All of them link to the site Toddieg mentioned. Assuming they get surfed in the next couple of weeks we should have them banned within a month after that and results soon thereafter.
For those who don't know what this test is about, it's to test the BLOOP theory...Backlink Over Optimization Penalty. Whether or not you can get a site penalized for linking to them.
Update (7/4/05): Still waiting for indexing. Have about 300,000 pages created now.

How many backlinks does the site have pre-GeoffreyF67 mass link attack?

Pointing lots of links with the same anchor text at a single page in order to get that page to rank for the words used in the anchor text.
"miserable failure" (without the quotes) is the classic example. Search for it on Google and you'll see the #1 site does not have those words anywhere on the page. Just lots of SEO-mided folks pointing links to it.

*Whether or not you can get a site penalized for linking to them.*
Sorry G-man, is it the linking or the linked to site you expect to be penalised?

The experiment is to see if the site receiving the links will be penalized due to getting 150- 200,000 inbound links all at once, which is of course unnatural.

I can save you a lot of time. Yes the site will be penalized for "that phrase" and I guarantee it.

Let me start off by saying, thanks for taking the time for this experiment

I disagree. I am guessing the links will simply not count, therefore there will be no penalty nor benefit.
Unfortunately, unless the site is already ranking for a given phrase then we are still not proving this one way or the other. (keeping my fingers crossed that it was done this way)

I think you are really doing a test of Google Bowling, not Google Bombing.

yes, donna is right - this is google BOWLING, not google BOMBING... bombing is like the 'miserable failure' thing done with geoge bush.
anyway, my site is the site that is going to be BOWLED off the map (in theory)... there has been ongoing debate that incoming backlinks can hurt your site (one way links that you don't control) ... rand has personally seen one of his sites disappear off of yahoo because of scraper sites linking to him. i have always believed that this couldn't affect my rankings, but i guess now the true test will be performed.
my site is www westcoastsurfing com and currently ranks on all 3 engines for 'west coast surfing' ... we're going to try to bowl that off the map, and/or see if any of the pages will become de-indexed.
Stats (at the beginning of the experiment)
Links:
G - 104
MSN - 532
Y! - 30,100
Home Page PR - 4
Ranking for 'west coast surfing'
G - 3
MSN - 1
Y! - 1
Pages Indexed:
G- 539
MSN - 207
Y! - 51
Geoff and I will keep everyone updated on progress of this bowling experiment.
It's been fun everyone... Time to leave for good. See this for more details.
