If you use Google's "services" a lot, it's really better to use the API rather than just a run-of-the-mill online check.

The API allows for more "hits" per day. If you frantically use tools WITHOUT using the API, your IP might be temporarily blocked.

So, it depends.
Anyway, most people have got an API key for free @ Google. Dunno if they are still providing them...........

Google have announced that the old SOAP API is no longer supported. It still works, but they're not handing out any new API keys. There's a new AJAX API, but that works completely differently.

That's a link for a Google account. That's not an API key. This confirms they're no longer available:

Yes, it was there. The links are more obvious to me, because they have rel=nofollow on them -- which causes my version of Firefox to mark them with a fat blinking red exclamation point LOL.
