I don't mean to be rude, but you're small fry as far as google is concerned, they are not going to mess with their algorithm just to stop you dominating your sector, it doesn't make any financial sense (why would they spend the time, and why would they undermine themselves by supporting inferior pages).
Going back to tstolber's initial post you need to change your understanding of relevance. As far as the algorithm is concerned it has chosen the most relevant page for the search, that's regardless of what you or I think, or can see. This is google's game, we just have to adapt to it as best we can
Something has changed of that there is no doubt, but there are so many factors, maybe a lot of your internal links have been devalued on potentially spammy grounds, maybe some of your techniques have been overused by blackhats and their advantage has been removed as a result, or maybe your competition has just got better at competing.
All I or anyone else can really suggest is that you go away and change some of the things suggested and if that works, change it some more, I doubt there is going to be a "prodigal son returns" moment when you jump from page four or five back to page one.
