Does anyone notice google take action on those site selling links. I found some site that has pr9 now drop to pr5 because this site selling links.

Watch out for those of you who selling links, even u put no follow tag. I notice some sites that sell links with nofollow also being effected by this update

Sometimes things may not be as they appear...

Is it Google taking action against the selling of links or possibly changing how it calculates sitewide links?

While these sites all have 'link selling in common'... it's their own PR that is affected and now what they pass; which more logically suggests they had higher PR links coming in (or more PR links coming in) before than they do now.

I wouldn't jump to conclude that "selling" will reduce your PR without alot of investigating.

We took a PR hit on our main site from PR5 to PR3. We have never sold or purchased any backlinks. My initial thoughts are that directories were devalued... thereby affecting our PR through a ripple effect.

Maybe something else is at play...

We run over 100 pages with affiliate ads on them... could Google now be considering affiliate links as our selling paid links? I doubt it... but what if...

Any major affiliate sites been hit hard as far as PR?

Are you suggesting that Google has decided that advertising is a bad thing no matter what? What's going to happen to MSN and Yahoo's home pages?

While plausible - unlikely... at least as a generalization "directories".

You are an 'oddball' (that's not a dig) quite different from the other domains so it may be easier to determine the common denominator.

Fathom... I would like to think the same. Quick thought was directories... We are in a lot of them.

I am in data gathering mode. We should not have been hit... all other adjustments for years have always just passed us by... Not this time.

PR4 in many datacenters which makes the drop rather smallish could be explained by a single lost edu link.

No matter for all the great advice you give here -- Give me a few title phrases and descriptions plus a 500-1000 word domain/company overview and can have 20 or so solid links.

I would describe taking action as any of the following:

    1. Banning the URL.

    or

    2. Deliberately lowering your SERPs.

If the "action Google takes" doesn't affect your traffic and your conversions then no damage is done (IMO). Lowering the PR of the site.....who cares! I don't waste my time worrying and wondering about PR.

    • SEO_AM agrees : SERPs are where it is at. However, a dramatic PR drop or algo change should be analyzed to ensure it is not a first step towards a possible SERP impact.

A question... Did you ever think you would have over 6,000 posts on SEO Chat? When I first joined SEO Chat it was to ask one very basic question... Now I sit with over 5,000 posts. It has been interesting over the last few years. I made mistakes here at times and on my pages at times... but that is how we learn.

Fathom: I e-mailed the write-up to you. Thanks again!

    Another thank you.

Hey SEO_AM, you are in money terms right?
I'll PM you a PR4 site (most pages PR4) that has hardly any outgoing links. Pick yourself a page and you'll have the only link from the page in its right hand column... Send me anchor text, description and destination.

Fathom - I'm on my way to 5k links and will hit you up when I get them! LOL

How do you guys check or analyze what changes do what? Do you only do a few things per week and see what happens? We currently link build on several forums and blogs, submit articles and register in directories so it would be difficult to see what does what. Are there tools? Any feedback would be greatly appreciate as we're busting ace everyday and ending up with nothing.

    - raz any luck getting me that info on the PR4 link?
