Freshbot Q: We alternate from #1 ranking to n/a every day
My site gets indexed by freshbot apparently (every day there is the previous day's date beneath our links on Google). What is strange is that many pages alternate between ranking #1 for a query one day, then being completely gone the next day, then ranking #1 a few days after that again.
Does anyone with greater understanding of the workings of freshbot than mine have an explanation for this? Are we being punished, then forgiven, then punished, over and over again for some overlooked fault? (The links to these pages do not change from day to day.) Thanks for any input. John |

If your site is new, this is normal behaviour until the deep crawling Googlebot comes round and you get in to the index on a definitive basis.
Actually you should be pleased - with other engines you wouldn't be in at all and in fact 1 year ago you wouldn't even be in Google until the site was deep crawled, since the Freshbot is relatively new. Gringo. |

Actually, the site isn't new, and the pages in question have been indexed by the deep crawler, as they have already been through one Google dance. That is what is confounding - I had thought that once the Google dance came round, they would be 'locked' in place for a month, but they are still stuck in this cycle of disappearing then reappearing. When they disappear, they don't show up in a search AT ALL - not even way down the list. Then, the next day, they're back at number one.

Then it's not normal behaviour, obviously. Why don't you put your site in your profile so we can check what's happening?

Hallo to everybody,
I have seen the same behaviours of Gogglebot in my site: a day the keyword work at the top, the day after they are down and Google show the old cache again... I will put the URL in the profile too Thank you and best regards Gaber |

If either of you have made changes recently to better optimize your sites, the Freshbot will be picking up those changes and increasing your ranking. Then, when the "fresh" sites are not reflected in Google, which happens every now and again, your rankings go down again.

I started a site (http://googlevillage.info) on January 2 and have Googlebot come everyday. If I miss feeding it a new page then I drop out of the Google database. Googlebot does not come around daily after a day without at least one new page and I lose everything in the Google listings.
There seems to be three Googlebots around now. One for the main monthly to 45 days sequence of updating that takes everypage. That happened on January 18 for me. The next one seems to come for the daily new page and if it does not get a new page fails to return for 3 days (as it did not on January 11 to 15 for me). The third behaviour is the Googlebot that seemed to come back-and-back-and-back over several hours. It sampled only those pages that had links in the body of the page. I compared notes with webmasters yesterday of two sites I have quoted recently and we comapred logs. Googlebot seemed to move from my machine to those I have linked to. All I know, the three days that Googlebot did not visit gave me four days of not being listed in Google database period. Then they all came back the next day after the return of Googlebot. I have been reading in Webmaster World and others seem to have similar events. |

Here is one page that frequently 'blinks' between a listing of 4 for 'sell rare books' and a n/a listing:
http://www.pbagalleries.com/rarebooks/buyrarebooks.php I just started playing with search engine optimization methods last month (had to when the site switched to php), so I wasn't sure if this would get flagged as spam or not. Apparently it hasn't, but it is 'gone' from the search results about 1 out of 2 days. This has been going on for about a month, carried over since mid-December. John |

The only link I can find to this page is this one and this page has PR0. This is perfectly normal if your site has quite new, since Google tends to take 2 to 3 months to include all pages of a new web in its index.
I suggest you wait a month or two to see what happens - if you have just changed to PHP Google is probably right in the middle of re-spidering all your pages. Gringo. |

Interesting - last time I checked that page had a PR of 4 or 5. Maybe Google is re-assigning PR to that page from day to day, which in turn affects the linked page's ranking in results.
I guess I should link to that page from more than one spot, to generate more PR. |
