    Effect of Domain Hosting's Location on Ranking

    Hi,

    Just a quick one.

    We've got a site selling exclusively to the Australian market, yet our domain hosting is with a US company.

    I've been told that this may be harming our rankings on google.com.au.

    If someone would be so kind as to share their wisdom I would be forever grateful

    I think the domain register company do not effect on ranking for google.com.au. Because the domain is use all over the world.

    If you marketting exclusively to Australia, I suggest you get a domain with xxx.au。At the same time, the web hosting had better position on Australia. It will crawl faster by google.com.au.

    The other poster is basically right. There is an advantage of hosting a site targetting Australia in Australia. The size of the advantage is open to discussion. It is by no way necessary and a geo advantage can be gained by lots of australian links, set geo area in webmaster tools, .com.au domain extension. But there is an advantage.

    It will not "harm" your rankings.

    Google takes multiple into account in assigning relevancy score

    * IP address of your web host server
    * TLD of your domain
    * Specified geo target in Google Webmaster Central,

    However you can outrank an .au tld domain hosted in Australia by non country specific TLD hosted outside Australia if you have one superior edge – LINKS !
