Duplicate content on your own site -- penalty for this? Or move it to new site?

I have searched this site and read some past threads on duplicate content.

I have a question. We have a lot of duplicate content that is on our site -- content on one page on our site that is also on another.

Will Google penalize us for this?

Are we better off moving some of that duplicate content to another site altogether? My fear is that doing so will make it look like a BH technique -- because we'll have other outside sites that in many cases contain duplicate material, pointing to our present site.

    Thanks!

How much content are you duplicating? 1 paragraph out of 10? The entire page except for a few adjectives? Why are you duplicating the content?

Entire pages and blocks of paragraphs.

It's hard to say without seeing the site, but in general, you should reconsider what value is gained from duplicating entire pages. G will likely just drop one of them and rank whichever one it deems to be the primary.

A paragraph here or there amongst mostly unique content should not be a problem.

Duplicate content on your own site can definitely be problematic. Most of the time, with duplicate pages, Google just indexes 1 and places the other(s) into supplemental results. This is not that big a deal, because only one would rnk anyway, BUT you don't get to choose which one Google keeps. I have seen a number of cases where the page that remained in the regular index was not the strongest page, and in turn did not rank as well as the strongest page would have.

I have seen other instances where it seemed to me that the entire site was penalized. I can't prove this, but with one client, we added nofollow, nocache to the robots meta tag on all duplicate pages, leaving only 1 in Google's index and the those pages shot up in the SERPs shortly thereafter, as did the site's home page. That was just one site, so the results are far from definitive.

I do not think a big problem for duplicate content if it is two much. I have a forum and web, both two have lots of similiar content, but still very high ranking in google.

    hi there,

I saw a SEO tool a few weeks ago. I write my URL in this tool and it returns to me all sites with same content (I mean paragraphs or entire content).
My problem is that i forgot to bookmark it....

Do u know guys where can i find this tool (or similar) again...!
I worked before with tools that work similar "percentage" content between sites but it doesnt show what part of content are the same.

    Thanks for your time

YOU CAN DUPLICATE CONTENT WITHOUT PENALTY!!
It is dependent upon how much of any given page is repeated to another. I have used up to 80% duplication without a problem, e.g. a U.S. state-by-state offering of information. There is no hard and fast rule on duplication except that 100% duplication MIGHT cause you to get a penalty. I have successfully duplicated up to 90% of any given page without a problem. Others may have experienced different results.
