not a good idea at all. Our site is currently being punished for this. You don't want to have more than one URL on your site pointing to the same content.

Different sites having duplicate content is no problem. G will pick the site to display for search and ignore others. But dupe content on the same site=problem

What about having the same image on different pages? - is this a problem?

What exactly defines "Duplicate content." It is a % of the page or the "exact" same page that is defined as a dup?

Thx

Thats not true... Google will penalize you if you steal/have the same content as another site...

It depends on what type of content is being duplicated, how much, the link juice you have and other things as well.

If the actual readable content of the page is the part being duplicated it won't hurt you, it just won't help. If the blocks and sidebar elements are being repeated this is normal and won't hurt you at all.

The main thing you want to try to do is have some type of value for each page that can be indexed by search engines and above all be useful for your users. If the duplicate content is useful for your users it is probably not a big deal.

If you want to go into more detail a better answer can be provided.

Thanks.. I know this thread is now really old, but I think that even after spending over a year on this issue, it is still confusing to me. I'm guessing that it is still confusing to others as well.

I think the issue of duplicate content is way more complicated than most talk about. They seem to treat it as a Yes/No issue. As pointed out above, there are many factors at play here. At the heart of the matter, content that is found somewhere else on the Internet that is the same as you page will have a diminishing impact. Google simply likes unqiue stuff. And they can tell down to the sentence level. But does this mean that, say, a paragraph that is duplicate with 50 other sites will carry no weight - I don't think so. I think the weight will just be watered down dramatically over a paragraph that is totally unique.

Hope this helps. Like I said, I'm just beginning to understand this myself. Look how old my last post was to know how long I've been trying. Please don't flame me if you don't agree - just help the discussion along because this is complicated and people should understand it.
