Duplicate Content
I'm working on a site and the page that opens as the Home page is different to the page that appears when the Home page link is clicked on.
Is this a duplicate content issue and do I need to add the canonical link to one of the pages?

Is the "page" different or is the "url" different and the page the same?

It sounds like the page is the same, and the url is different, in which case adding a rel="canonical" tag is a great solution. 301 redirects also work, but rel="canonical" is cleaner, faster, requires less effort, doesn't bleed PR, and is specifically designed for this sort of thing.
