    duplicate content?

    Hi,

where does the duplicate content problem starts. I have written a text, travelstories etc. which I publish on my website but also give away to get links from other sites. They usual take the content 1:1 and publish it as well.
How does that effect my homepage?
does it matter where the content was published first?
how does google know who to give a penalty?
or does everybody on the net which uses the content get a penalty?

How do others work with this problem?

    Thanks for your time!!!

the caches are all fairly new. My question is more about the future. We just do a lot of new stuff and I want to avoid to get penalized. some people tell you to mgive your content away to get links, others say watch for duplicated content.

Thats what I try to figure out - how can I avoid to get penalized??

    thanks for your help!

My personal opion is that you should watch out for duplicate content. Maybe create a separate section or subdomain on your site for this type of content.

    OR EVEN BETTER
Create content specifically for giveaway purposes and try and divorce it from your core site so if a duplicate filter hits your core site will not be damaged ( what about another domain just for these giveaways - but the link back to you must be to your core/main domain which will then benefit from the giveaways on the secondry domain.

What % of same content on page is considered duplicate?
Which site gets priority? Higher PR? The first one to publish?
    Anybody ideas?

Which site gets priority with duplicate content is inconsistent. Generally the older site does, but I have seen older sites penalized for duplicate content on a new site. As for the % of duplicate content to trigger the filter, I don't know for sure, but I would keep it to under 50% for sure.

Regarding giving away content to generate links, the best solution is to give away unique content, but there are plenty of other good options. If you have a 200 page site, and you give away content that makes up 80% of the content on 1 of those pages, your entire site is not going to get penalized. At most, just that 1 page will. So, don't use that page as a landing page (one optimized for SEs). Use other pages with unique content to target the SEs. That way if that 1 page gets penalized, it has no material effect on your traffic. Just make sure you send the inbound links to a different page. One with unique content. And don't duplicate too many pages from your site.

Hmmm...This is an intriguing question indeed.

How does this affect sites like articlecity? Or any other free article site.

I've seen a lot of discussion that it's a good thing to get content and this is a great way to get backlinks as well.

Anyone ever tried these article sites and used their articles with any type of success?
