Drop in rank since updating to https

    Hi Guys

I have a network community forum based sites for many years. Back in Jan i started to convert them to https.

I basiscally set it up as follows

    1. Converted all software and internal links (apart from internal link members inputted over the years to other threads)
    2. Created the Forced http to https
    3. Checked all of this with direct checker.
    4. Deleted old google webmaster tools and made a https version
    5. Submitted new sitemap

Crawling from google seems good, but then in feb/ march we saw around a 30% drop and it seems that our rankings have fallen.

We are seeing a typical ranking from 2.1 to 7.8

Can anyone recommend some tips on what to check? I presume the ranking is mostly on the http version, but i was under the assumption that a 301 redirect would hand over the ranking to the https.

    cheers

301 permanent redirect would do the magic, but make sure to create all the forms of your website on Google search console...the same happened to my page but all my links came back in a matter of time...

As Google thinks the HTTP and HTTPS are separate pages, it will get the idea sooner or later, and they will restore most or all of your rankings and traffic once they realize. It takes 2 weeks to 2 months to gain your website rankings back. Here you need to canonicalize the pages to let Google know these are the same pages. Canonical tag should be pointed to HTTPS version of the pages. Check your scripts and CSS that call to load images from external files. If those external flies/sources are not encrypted, your SSL security for the page that loads them will be broken making them unsecured. So you will not get the benefit of SSL despite having the certificate. Also check if the certificate is installed properly and make sure if your certificate is added to your CDN. Lastly, I hope your internal links point at HTTPS versions of pages.

If you redirect properly with a 301 from http to https you will benefit from it. Google rewards https sites

Sure, here is one of them toyotaownersclub.com and the main bulk of the site is within the forums toyotaownersclub.com/forums/
In Jan we switched to https, seeing same sort of trend for all

The http site returns a 301 redirect and the https returns a 200 so everything is OK it is a matter of time till you get your ranking back

yeah, don't worry about this, HTTPS is the way to go. But there may be many factors that your ranking is dropping, not to do with the switch to HTTPS

How long have you been running the top heavy ads on your pages. Notice the red arrows in the picture, they point to ads. You have very little content above the fold other than ads. This is known to cause ranking issues and could very well be your problem. Try pushing the second set of ads down the page and floating your content up. Test this on a couple of pages and see what happens. I think you will see your rankings improve.

It will take a time before you take your rankings back. It happened to a site of mine. It used to get 2000 visits per day, I switched to https and I took a hit in rankings and traffic (dropped to 1000-1200 per day), but in the course of 2 weeks everything improved vastly and I even broke my record of daily visits.
