Links to you cannot harm you ... so no - not a penalty for that anyway.

In that case I will empty the entire google index by linking to all non-relevant sites from every site on my server, getting them penalised - until only I remain

It makes less than zero sense for Google to penalise sites for incoming links.

Also - the backlinks and page rank updates are using data from the past... so why would the loss of placement correspond with the BL/PR update?

Every time there's an update people who lose placement jump to conclusions about the reason(s) for those changes - 99% of the time the conclusions are incorrect.

Look for some other cause - backlinks can't hurt you, if Google take that tack they will fast become the smallest search engine on the planet.

Backlinks are the only thing I have been adding to my site for the past 6 months, besides content.

    After the update,

I've dropped for all competitve terms (the ones I've been heavily backlinking)

My page rank dropped from 7 to 0

So... explain that one to me.

Oh and I don't link to anybody.

(Not trying to be rude, but I can't find an explaination)

Man that sucks... sorry to hear it.
There are many possibilities but speculation is a real danger to us "SEO types"

Best thing is you give us a history of your site and site promo' and post the url... hopefully we can shed some light on the real cause of the problem.

Also - be aware that - imho Google's PR has been in a mess this year; ever since the BigDaddy rollout (March...ish) I have seen - and continue to see - many obvious errors in PR values (eg: internal pages with identical numbers of incoming links and vastly different PR values etc).

For a while I thought this might be a deliberate attempt to "muddy the waters" and make PR display as useless as backlinks display, but it does sound (and seem) as if they're trying to fix it up; so my conclusion is that it is still erroneous in some areas.
Having said that a drop from PR7 to PR0 is unlikely to be a simple error... give us more info' and let's see if we can help

Its [www] . [ball] [is] [tic] [merch] [ant] [services] . [com]

(don't want that comming up in search results)

The only other thing it could be, is that I started adding product manuals to product pages, i.e

    Omni 3750 Brochure
    Omni 3750 Restaurant Manual
    Omni 3750 Retail Manual
    Omni 3750 Installation Guide

I know it was a little spammy, but I did not intend it to be. Google MAY have seen that as duplicate content. I have taken them back off.

    Incoming links CANNOT harm you..

If any form of inbound link schemes could hurt a websites rankings, I would be doing it to my competitors non-stop!!!

The internet simply would not work if this was the case!!

Well, I'm certainly feeling harmed. Feel free to provide another explanation.

I'm willing to bet that your competitors have been around for quite a while, and have established trust with google. That would make it hard to depromote them.

We all know that google places more scrutiny on newer websites.

    Hi klack,

I don't think that was the issue.

You have page rank on some inner pages (eg: /terminals/hypercom_optimum_m2100.asp).

Your index page is not cached nor is it listed in Googles index of your site...

You index page is accessible as:
    http://www.ballisticmerchantservices.com
    http://www.ballisticmerchantservices.com/index.asp
    http://ballisticmerchantservices.com
    http://ballisticmerchantservices.com/index.asp
    http://www.ballisticmerchantservices.com/# ***
    http://ballisticmerchantservices.com/# ***

So it might be a canonical / duplicate content issue:

*** You have this line of code at the start of your menu (first available link on the page): <a href="#">SERVICES</a>
When I click that I go to http://www.ballisticmerchantservices.com/# (your index page).
It's an anchor tag link which is incomplete... if you want to correct it put a tag anchor at the very top of the page, immediately below the <body> tag & name it - eg:
    <a name="merchant-services"></a> then change the link to read <a href="#merchant-services" rel="tag">SERVICES</a>

You also need to redirect from "non-www" to "www"... I can do this with unix/apache but have no clue how to do mod_rewrite for asp pages - I have seen the answer on the forum before though so you can probably find it.

This may not be the ONLY issue which is causing you problems but it could well be as simple as that - Google see 6 copies of your home page and are penalising for 100% duplicate content. I would recommend you fix it and see if your page gets cached in the near future... then you know it will regain it's correct page rank at the next update.

I would also strongly recommend a Google sitemap - that will help to clear up the canonical problem (you can assign one address as your "default home page"); I would also set up a cron job to run & submit sitemaps on a regular basis - that way new products/pages will also get indexed faster.

Final comment - all your shopping cart pages are titled "Shopping Cart" so are coming up as supplemental pages; if you can't use seperate titles I would at least consider using "Merchant Accounts and Credit Card Processing Solutions: Shopping Cart" as the titles.

Thanks for your suggestions ClickyB, I will certainly address those issues.

After Sep 30th, I have submitted a sitemap to google and have set my default home page.

But I have been running this site for over a year now and have previously enjoyed high rankings and pagerank on almost every page. I can't see why I would be getting penalized now.

That's common to a lot of problems... google doesn't spot them for ages so when they do - everybody assumes it can't be them...
It could simply be that somebody has recently added a link to your site without the "www".

One more question that has been looming in the back of my mind.

Should I file a reinclusion request after fixing these problems? My website no longer appears in search results when I search for my company name.
