Don't Understand Use of "Link:domainname.com

Can someone please shed some light on something for me. When I search link:tmhdesign.com in Google I see a lot of back links to my site. BUT, when I choose some of my clients' sites I get back "no results" time and time again. For example, I tried:

link:appesbach.com

link:fragsburg.com

link:centralfunding.com

These are domains that have been online for quite awhile and I know there are other sites linking to them, so why does Googe show now backlinks?

Try to search as:

link:www.appesbach.com
link:www.fragsburg.com
link:www.centralfunding.com

According to my knowledge it is the searching term. You must get some benefit through it.

That did it, thanks so much. How does Google determie which pages to count as backlinks. Some sites of mine show a handful of backlinks when I know there are hundreds...

Noone knows for sure, but it is theorized that Google only shows a subset or sample of your actual backlinks, the higher the quality of a link the more likely it shows (From my experience) - they also tend to show a lot of backlinks from the site itself.

thal; one of my favorite tricks for getting Google to tell you more is to use their qualifiers.

for example:
Code:
"appesbach"+.com -site:www.appesbach.com

just like that. This allows you to search for instances of a particular domain name and subtract out all the indexed pages for that site. It works a little better than the "link" function, but it's not perfect either. It should give you a better idea about the number of links you're up against. Use it with a grain of salt because it becomes less accurate with shorter domain names since you may find one word in your URL appearing inside another domain name, potentially.

Good luck.

This was true before, but it has not been our experience as of late. We have many many .edu links, but G only indicates a couple of them.

good quality links matters

In my 2 years of optimization I had seen this happening when many of my sites enjoy back links but google only gives a few handful when searched . It is a proven fact that google gives those back link credence which it considers a worthful link.
Infact I had seen many times links from High PR site is also not shown in google link check and I found that it was from a completely unrelated site to mine.
hence it can be said that google gives the results of only quality links.

CV... you are totally wrong. It used to be that Google would show a sample of only the higher PR sites, but now it is totally random. Google shows a sample of ALL backlinks.

One thing you need to keep in mind is that google only updates public links displays every once in a while, not in a rolling measure like yahoo or msn. You will always get skewed results using the link: query in google. Just use yahoo and msn to gauge a more up to date result set of your sites links.
