Domain Forwarding & Backlinks

Hi Everyone,

I currently have two domains.

One is mysite.com and the other is mysite.com.au

The mysite.com.au currently redirects to mysite.com

I primarily want people to know me by my .com.au domain as it is more relevant to my target market.

The question I have however, is for the purpose of building backlinks am I better off creating the backlink for the .com domain or is it ok to create backlinks for the .com.au domain even though it automatically redirects?

Thanks in advance and my apologies if this is in the wrong section

I don't get it: you say you want .com.au to be your main domain, yet it "automatically redirects"? This makes no sense to me, could you clarify?

Also, what kind of "domain forwarding" are you using? You should use none other but a 301 redirect.

To answer your question, in general you should build links directly to your main domain for best SEO results.

Sorry if I didnt provide the correct info below, to clarify:

I built a website using an online builder however I was only able to use a .com domain with this website (as they do not provide or manage .com.au domains).

I later purchased the .com.au domain as I am based in Australia/felt it was better targeted to customers I am trying to attract. The provider of the .com.au domain allows me to redirect the domain to my .com address (I will haveto enquire if this is 301 redirect).

For the purposes of backlinks I should be creating them for the .com domain?

If I understood your ques, you are willing to optimize the .com.au domain and want your visitors to land on this domain. So ideally, in your case, the .com domain should be redirected to the .com.au domain via a 301redirect. Correct me if i am wrong.

since its redirecting even the old traffic or backlinks will also transfer to the new domain..

You need to decide which domain to use. If you really think that .com.au is a better choice for you for branding reasons, then move to .com.au and 301-redirect the .com to it. (Although I think the whole world is now comfortable with .com). But if your .com site has already achieved some Google rankings, they may be affected to a degree if you redirect it.

But definitely use only one domain for both branding and link building.

That said, if your .com site is not hosted in Australia, this will hurt your rankings in Google.com.au. TO work around this, you can do one of the following:
1. Go with .com.au instead
2. Move to an Oz host
3. Associate the site with Australia in Google Webamster Tools
4. Simply build a lot of links to the site from sites that are either .com.au or hosted in Oz.

I suspect that "domain forwarding" in your case might be "frame forwarding" and not a 301 redirect. Insist on a 301!
