Are doing 301s from multiple pages to a single page ok?

I am consolidating pages in my website to help visitors navigate more easily. I am consolidating a number of pages into a single page and want previous visitors to my web site to land on the new page, no matter which old URL they go to. I have heard that doing 301s from mulitple pages to a single page is viewed negatively by Google and I don't want this to hurt my web site and page ranking. Is this true or can I do 301s from multiple pages to a single new page?

I've never heard that and have been doing this stuff for quite awhile. I think it's safe to say if redirecting several pages to a single page improves the user experience that you'll see no adverse effect (other than, at least, the temporary loss of rankings that the individual pages may have been getting)
