    Does size matter

Does the size of your blog home page have any effect on how high blog postings appear in a google search.

After noticing articles stopped appearing in the index after they fall off the homepage I increased the size of the homepage to allow more articles to fit on.

If google indexes the home page of your blog - Would a blog with 10 items on the homepage return better rankings than say a blog with 100 items on the home page.

No... rankings are based on mostly backlinks... so the amount of effect that it will have is so little i dont think it will make more than 1 position up or down in your rankings.

Rankings would depend upon the content difference resulting for the differences in page size - plus many other factors of which links are likely to be the most significant.

But I am very certain that 20 items will yield more TRAFFIC than 10 items.

    Thanks

I was concerned that bigger meant lower ranking. I must have got it the wrong way round.

Ill stick with the larger homepage then.

Realy the question is better rankings for what? Let's say you blog about blue widgets. The article then progressively sinks to 97th on the home page. Someone searches for blue widgets and clicks through to your blog. Are they going to bother to scroll through 96 articles to find what they want? Are they going to use Find? Or are they just going to hit the Back button?

Really the best thing is to sort out your indexing problems such that the individual articles can each be found in a search.

    Hi Egol.

I enjoyed your article. You seem happy with the 20 item homepage.

I think mine is a tad bigger though. Perhaps I should drop to 20 ?

    Hi John,

I dont forsee that problem happening to me. My blog is about see fishing in Whitby in England - We arent talking big time hits here. Information on this activity is limited and IMO someone looking for info on fishing from 1 particular boat or beach in my area would I think quite possibly stay and read more of the blog than what he initially was looking for. I may be a little naive about that, but Ill wait and see. At the moment I feel the more I get to look at the blog the more who will come back for more installments.

    Cheers - Glenn

On one blog; I set to roll after 4 posts. I keep each post to around 120 words or so.
Another blog; Set to roll after 3 posts. Each post around 150+ words.
I only update these a couple of times a week. I basically treat them more like a website than a blog.

One of them does quite good in MSN, for the little work that it takes.
