    Does image ALT text carry same SEO benefit as text link anchor text?

    The subject line says it all. If I have someone put an image on their site with ALT text "XYZ Company", does that carry the same benefits in terms of SEO as having a text link on their site with the anchor text "XYZ Company" ?

    All your help is greatly appreciated,
    -=Vince

    The text link carries more weight than the alt attribute.

    Wait. Are you asking if another site put your site's name as an alt tag for an image on their site... would it help your site in any way at all?

    Is the image an image link to your site? If not... it wouldn't help your site at all. It would help their page a tiny bit be better optimized for your company name.

    I just meant if website X posts an image with our site as the link and a keyphrase that we want as the ALT text. Would this hold the same weight as getting a standard text link to our site with the same keyphrase as the anchor text.

    If the image is linked and the only "text" used is the alt tag - it should help a little... (a "title tag" might do the same or more); but with a text link - you're much more certain of that "help".

    I usually ask for the image with a short piece of text underneath - all linked (as one anchor) to my site...
    That way you get the benefits of both the "visual attraction" and the anchor text.

    The link is counted as a backlink... but what you can do, if you want the benifits of a text link, and the graphic qualities of an image link... is offer the html of a table with a graphic background, and text link on top.

    <table width="100%" height="56" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" background="http://www.yourwebsite.com/background.gif"><tr>
    <td height="56" align="center" valign="bottom"> &nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="http://www.yourwebsite.com" title="Your Keyword Phrase " target="_blank">Your Website's Keyword Phrase</a></td>
    </tr>
    </table>
