Does Google push down news articles?
Here's the situation.
My website was slowly crawling up the rankings, taking what I learnt and applying it.
An event happened in the industry im in and lots of news websites posted articles about it with the keywords I use, used in the article, title, alts and all that jazz.
Now I can see that these articles which started to rank above me (and yes, they ranked, not latest and all that) are now slowly being pushed down and I'm appearing above them and I havent done any SEO for the past month (since the articles were posted).
Will these articles slowly disappear or will they stay in those places? Meaning, if no one did any SEO for those keywords would they stay at that rank or does Google think "this is a news article and shouldnt replace dedicated websites in the rankings"?
Thats probably wrong, but any help is appreciated!

What industry you are targeting? Is it related to current events or news happening?
After Caffeine Update, Google is preferring to show news websites as Google think they are providing fresh content. And with this update their aim is to show fresh and latest content in the search results.

The industry doesnt receive news coverage but this change in the industry was praised and welcomed by the public which brought on all the news articles.
I understand what your saying about the Caffeine update but that isn't whats happening here, the articles are about 3 - 4 months old.
Content on the industry websites are updated fairly frequently.
I just wonder if these articles are here to stay are will they slowly disappear?

CNN has a PR10 homepage. If a news article gets a link on that homepage the article page rankings will immediately shoot up the SERPs.
After the link is removed from the CNN homepage that shot of power is gone and the rankings of the page will slowly fall.
The speed and depth of the fall will depend upon the number of links hitting that article that remain on the CNN website and on other websites.

Also, 95% of news is old the instant it's published. Today's news will be yesterdays news. Likewise, any links from news articles are immediately buried.

Interesting to note though, I did a Wordpress post at my blog on the then pending merger of Yahoo and Bing in 1999. If you put in - Yahoo and Bing merging- at Google my site comes up #3, even though there were a considerable amount of articles on this subject in July of 2010.
Certainly my little PR4 SEO consulting site doesn't have more link juice than all of the other bigger news worthy sites that posted on this topic in July 2010!?
Now search for this phrase at Google: google yahoo bing august 2010 market share - my site is #1 over which sites?!?!
Comscore the original authors
Nielsen
Yahoo News
Compete.com
and
Media week.....
Wow....didn't know I had that much authority! I use the All In One SEO plug in for Wordrpress and I get and hold rankings like this all of time. I would love to tell you it is because I have this great following and massive link juice but I don't. So there is some other answer that comes into play here.
Thoughts anyone....Fathom? Googler? Egol? DJ? Gazzahk? P.B.? Other friends and contributors!
(Note I corrected the first search term from merger to merging).

I do not see you site coming up anywhere in the top 100 for that search term. I know I am stating the obvious but do you have personlised search enabled?

Which search term? Yes I have personalized search turned off (come Gary you should know better than to ask that).
Google Yahoo Bing August 2010 Market Share is an example I use for clients wanting Wordpress blogs. I get 10 - 20 visitors a month for that phrase each time I change the month and I'm almost always #1 each month. Don't know why you aren't seeing it?

No you are right. Sorry....the term is Yahoo and Bing Merging and my site is #3 (1999 post). My mistake. Even the other example is relative though. My site in theory should not be outranking those other more news worthy sites based on what I've read and typically see (IMO).

My guess would be then that that specific phrase is not very competative or even very used ie if you search it using "Yahoo and Bing Merging" it only returns 277 results and none of the sites that come up seem to be very big sites. I would speculate the term merging was not used by the big sites and therefore that is why they are not in these SERPs.
