    Do I need hreflang tags?

    Hello -

    In GWMT it gives me the warning that I don't have hreflang tags in my site. I specified the target country to be US, and I do not have any parts of my site that are in any language other than english. That said, can I just ignore this warning, or should I go ahead and set one?

    Is there any user-generated content on your website? I'm just wondering if there are some pages/content on your website, possibly user generated, that are in another language that makes Google think you have more than one language on your website.

    In any case, setting target country to US alone is not sufficient since there are hispanic and chinese websites too that cater to the American population. Have you set the lang parameter in the HTML tag of your website? It should look something like <html lang="en-US"> - this could possibly fix this.

    Thanks leadjoint - That brings up a good point - I know I have one blog post that has the word 'resume' in french-style, so perhaps this is triggering that warning. I do have <html lang="en-US"> implemented.

    I really don't think one word in one blog post is contributing to this. Are you using free themes for your website? There have been cases where free Wordpress themes have injected web pages spamming link to other websites. Even otherwise, I would suggest doing a 'site:example.com' search on Google to see if there are any foreign pages indexed from your website. Maybe they are causing Google to think you operate in more than one language.

    If nothing out of the ordinary turns up, I would ignore this warning as long as you are not seeing any traffic drop.

    Thanks LeadJoint - I have a premium WP theme using the Themify framework, and verified that no foreign pages are indexed. I think I'll just disregard the warning. I appreciate your help!

    Check your website's source code and find this one: <html lang="en-US". I am sure this code is not implemented on your website. That is why Google warns you.

    Actually, it is implemented. I recently changed the target country to be US, as it wasn't set before. I'm wondering if maybe this was the problem.

    Just don't specify a target country if you are targeting more than one country in GWT. "Hreflang tag" is use only for multilingual sites.. Is your site multilingual? If so then implement it properly like this...
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com/en-ie" hreflang="en-ie" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com/en-ca" hreflang="en-ca" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com/en-au" hreflang="en-au" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com/" hreflang="x-default" />
    <link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com/en" hreflang="en" />

    No, my site isn't multilingual (or at least I don't intend for it to be). Does this message always appear in GWMT if you don't have hreflang tags, or does it only appear if you don't have hreflang tags AND Google thinks your site is multilingual?
