The site is ranking number 1 for "builders London" will the links be devalued? Probably. Can the competition copy the links? yes.

The simple fact is that they are ranking number 1 from directory and blog comments.

while i agree that directories are no good for trying to get you to rank i dont think that WizBit has been treated very fairly here and I understand his frustration

i would that that "builders london" is a highly sought after search term (maybe not so much as 3 years ago) but i think its faily competitive - i use seomoz kw tool to determine competition for a phrase and they list this particular term as being "highly competitive"

rather than offering WizBit an explanation as to why that site may be ranking no.1 for that term you have all appeared to just say "directories dont work", "here's the directory list, you'll come crawling back"

all he's really asked for is an explanation, and you've all shot him down in flames!

It's been explained. There is as very low competition market for those keywords, there are not many sites doing SEO so ofcourse a few crappy links will boost it. Will it work now? Sure, will it last? HELL NO. 90% of those directories and blogs will be gone in a year and guess what, so will your SERP's.

It is ranking number 1 for a non-specific key phrase. As I said before you can rank that key phrase (well you probably can't) with VERY little effort.

yes, I see the competition, but the fact is those sites have done little to NOTHING to SEO their site, so sure, in this case you get some blog links OFCOURSE it will go up, there are no other sites with decent links competing. But WHAT WE ARE ALL TRYING TO SAY IS:


THESE LINKS ARE WORTHLESS, ONCE YOUR COMPETITION GETS REAL LINKS, YOUR SITE WILL BE GONE WITH THE WIND! GUESS WHAT, AS SOON AS THOSE BLOGS UPDATE THEIR CONTENT OR YOUR LINK ROLLS OFF THEIR PAGES YOU'RE GONE.

That site has links from some blogs and other crap, with no other sites doing SEO ofcourse the site will rank high. Let me take on a client in the same niche, give it 3 months and watch that site drop down in SERPs. Point blank.
