    differences between google.co.uk and google.com

Does anybody know the precise differences between google.co.uk and google.com.

    Do the algorhythms differ?
Can you optimise specifcially for google.co.uk?
Do they give links different weight depedning for geographical area ?

    Also at server level

Are they defintley on seperate servers ?
Do they do updates at the same time ?
Are the databases independant or cross linked ?

Does anybody have any more information on this and related information ?

Do the algorhythms differ? - Only in the sense that it has the ability to geo target UK only sites

Can you optimise specifcially for google.co.uk? - Yes call it .co.uk and locate in UK then if someone says only sites in UK you'll be there.

Do they give links different weight depedning for geographical area ? - Not in the sense that a UK site gets 5 points US site 2 points etc. But if your a .com on servers in the US you won't be seen on a show UK sites only search.

    Also at server level

Are they defintley on seperate servers ? - Yes but that doesn't matter.

Do they do updates at the same time ? - No it propogates over a time period aka 'Google Dance'

Are the databases independant or cross linked ? - Big relationships in the data but they are not identical each DC can have it's own data set.

The result are usually indentical unless the "pages from the UK" buttons is selected. If that is selected then the results will be from sites that have a UK suffix or that are hosted in the UK.

Any other differences are just due to normal data centre variance.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks for some good answers.

Just to clarrify so the geographical searches on filter out non UK sites from the search results only, the still count the links from all sites as the spider crawls ?

This would mean that google spiders are the same whichever server they are spidering for and the only difference would be identifying searches removing sites which are not specifically identified as from that area.

I can see a whole realm of possibilities in developing a more geographically specific search engine.

Yes that's correct the geo filter at the moment just removed non .co.uk sites and servers with non uk located IP addresses.

MSN are big on geo filtering and will generally always favour a site in the searchers country by default.
