Question Creating new keyword-relevant pages just for search engines?

If I am targeting the keyword "website templates," but would also like to grab all the less broad searches like "family website templates, music website templates, hosting website templates" and so on, would it be a good or bad idea to create new pages specifically targeted for each search term? For example I create

    family-website-templates.html
    music-website-templates.html
    hosting-website-templates.html

and link them all from one of my less important pages to get them indexed.

Do people do this, or is this a bad plan?

Yes. You can do that to target your secondary keywords. Create a site map and link them from that. And also make a 'Google Site Map' for your site and put the Urls of these new pages in it and submit it.

Can my main page get penelized if my new pages are somewhat similar to eachother? Would google see that as some kind of spam?

it depends on how similar, me thinks. but if you're showing the things your keywords are targetting, then there will be no problem..

I do it all the time, your catching on ;)

But don't just change the file name, make sure each page is optimized for each keyword phrase!

Don't forget to include an appropriate title to boot.

No, the main page will not get penalized. However, you may wind up with a duplicate content filter on the pages that target the terms you wish to rank for depending on how similar they are.

This is a very good way to traget all those secondary search phrases. To expand on what was suggested earlier, make sure each page is fully optimized for each phrase. You can use the same page design, just be sure to alter the text and images enough on each page to make them unique to the key phrase you are targeting.

Here is a simple tool that will help you determine how similar two pages are:

After I create the pages I was just going to link to them from a few of my unimportant pages to get them indexed. Should I also link all of these new keywords pages to each other, or can that be penalized?

    Thanks for all the help!
