    Content without links is dead.

For the none theological a wordplay from 'faith without works is dead' but .........

Not an anti content statement, but an understanding that content alone will not make a website rank.

We have some very emminent members on this site who quite rightly emphasis the importance of content.

However this content (whatever the quality) is only useful if people see it, thus the requirements of link's.

The advice to tell somebody to focus on good content when they have no, poor quality or very few links pointing to there site is just bad advice.

Any SEO strategy needs to employ both on and off page factors, link baiting is only a reasonable off page stratgy when a certain critical mass of traffic has been reached, before that point it is an excercise in futility.

    discuss..............

Not really. Content needs to be marketed if your site does not have the traffic.

Content just gets you into to the game. You still need to play the game to win...

I think one of the reasons for focusing the importance of content is because, for most of the website owners, they are more familiar with their own business / expertise than with SEO link building. It would be an easier start for them to focus on creating good content. If you are selling something you know better than anyone else, then you are in the best position to produce quality content for others to link to.
That's where they can add value, and added value creates something.

Yep create the content and market it with Adwords = quick links. Then you can really target exactly who you want to see it, so this is more of a benefit if you know exactly where the links are coming from.

    Leading up to that part.......

"Show me your content apart from the links, and I shall show you my content by my links..."

"Was not Amazon our father declared relevant by links after he had offered up eBay his son upon the altar?"

"Amazon put content in Google, and it was counted to him as relevance, and he came to be called Google's friend..."

"You see that a site is declared relevant by his links, and not by content alone...."

    Our Father, who art Google
    hallowed be thy Name,
    thy links may come,
    thy links will be done,
on Google as it is on the Internet.
Give us this day our daily links
    And forgive us our spam,
    as we forgive those
    who spamus against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
    but deliver us from evil.
For the Web is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
    for ever and ever.
    Amen.

Certainly content without links is dead...but links without content is search engine spam and useless.

At least, I think we can agree that this is not a chicken-or-egg issue; the content really needs to come first.

As I understand it, link building is something like networking taken to the next step and put online. That makes it a rather different skill from onpage optimization. It makes me wonder whether extroverts may have a natural advantage at link building.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

In the case of getting highest quality links without paying for them - you must FIRST have great content. Once you have great content it is a lot easier than most people believe to get links.

Sometimes, exceptional content can have hundreds of links or more within 24 hours just by tossing it in to an appropriate social media site... its like tossing gasoline on a fire - if you have the right content.

Othertimes, exceptional content requires old-fashioned link requests to get links... getting links isn't easy all of the time.

    • realityhack agrees : Very well put. I don't think people generally understand what we mean by 'exceptional' content. The article they wrote last night isn't it.

Great content can come in many forms, from information to creativity

Here is a creative one. Even though I would never visit the shop because Im male. I found myself playing with this for quite a while, and passing I passed it on.
