Competitor posting comments
A competitor of ours has recently started posting numerous comments on any media coverage/blogs that cover our company. Most are fake comments referring people to their products...others are just getting downright nasty.
Our company has always played fair and never engaged in any negative marketing tactics.

I think that you have three choices....
1) Do nothing
2) Hire an attorney
3) Go to his office and kick his ***

Buy a domain & set up and website with his brand in it "www.XyzIncorporatedAreSlanderingLibalousCharlatans .com" or something like that. Put examples of their nastiness up as evidence and send them the link over. Tell them they can put their blackhat SEO efforts into slander while you put your white hat effort into getting this new site above theirs. I for one would be happy to link my lickle site to your new domain.

How do you know it is really your competitor? Maybe some of your own (ex)clients just do not like you?
I have just had a case where there was a whole investigation and the competing company turned out to be innocent.
So I would make sure of my facts before going black, use the force Luke!
and also - why do you not post comments right back where you think your competitor is posting? People are not stupid and can judge for themselves what the real facts are... - Anyway, as long as you are having FUN!

I like that idea, but then you risk putting yourself in danger of the law.
If you were to take this route, I think it'd be best to use a domain without their name in it. Then point a bundle of strong links with their name to your new site. I know of an internet company that legally scams people out of money. When you look up their company's name, or founder's name, they come up #8 or 9, and all the other listings are about how they got scammed by them.
The Big Question: is it worth your time to go to these lengths? How much are they hurting your business? It might only take one threatening letter from your attorney to scare them away from these tactics.

If you have the URLs they have been commenting on and solid evidence that it is whoever you suspect it is, then I would take legal action. However you must be aware that the difficulty will be in proving who you think is carrying out this smear campaign

Slow down. If you can somehow prove it is your competitor then SUE. You'd be surprised how often this happens........................................... ...............................(that was sarcasm).

yeah, we definately won't be making any hasty accusations. for now will just point out the obvious 'web spammers' in the comments. if it gets any worse then legal action is the right course.
