    competitive keywords

    just a quickie..

if my competition has keywords of blue widgets and they are 800,000 websites listed on google with this keyword

.... and my keywords are blue widget and they are 1mil websites listed on google, which keywords would be best to concentrate on?

I guess it would depend on the keyword popularity?

    Which route would you go?

    Cheers,

There are two separate issues - competition and traffic.

You would need to use Google AdWords, WordTracker or some other tool to determine the traffic that each keyphrase is pulling. If you are only concerned with Google (& their syndication partners), then running an AdWords campaign for a day or two on each term should tell you what you need to know about the traffic pull.

To judge competition for the terms, evaluate the top 10-20 SERPs for each keyphrase and see how well they are optimized for the term. With a little bit of experience, it is usually easy to estimate where you can position a page with minimal (and separately with major) effort.

If both terms are carrying the traffic, try to target them both, perhaps with separate pages (under the same domain) as applicable.

I like Bernard's ideas... good advice all the way..

If there are 800,000 and 1,000,000 websites with those terms then the competition is likely to be pretty heavy. With that you will probably need to muster a lot of links to win topSERP.

My strategy there would be to follow Bernards advice and assess the competition and if it looks like a battle will occur I would go for the easy one first. This will get you to topSERP sooner and start a flow of money.... then, when you have the PR you can reoptimize and go after the bigger one or try to stretch your title tag and optimization to win topSERP on both with a single page.

If your competition are big sites, AND knowing what they are doing, and they target the plural, chances are this is with good reason.

The amount of sites with returned results is less relevant. Of course, it will be easier to get high rankings for the singular and once you are confident enough, make the move to plural. It might be better though to have a number one spot on singular than a number 8 spot on plural.... in short, the answer isn't easy. It depends on how fierce the competition is for the plural and singular and where you realistically think you can get your site/pages based on the competitors' sites/pages....

    Enjoy

When I first started and was playing for easy keywords the competition did not respond very strongly when you took a top spot away from them. However, when I took my first #1 on a competitive search term from my main competitor they got after my *** big time - responding with backlinks, reoptimization, price cuts and crosslinking. They recently started an affiliate program and will probably get a load of links from that. So, what looks like easy pickings at the moment can turn out to be an extended duel.

OK, I'll be a good boy. Anyway, Egol, they can't and must not ban someone like you. You are just too good.

I fear I can be banned though if I ever jested again like this.

But one more question. Moderators and administrators, please do bear with this one, but what's wrong with 'jack A'? Or is it a result of kind of 'spamming' I did?

    I promise, I won't do that again.

And hey even I can be an !%$#@# some times. Dont worry my friend you are safe
