Changing Domain

Hi

Our website due to branding is changing our domain name.

Currently we have the new domain redirecting to our old domain as it has not been changed over yet.

Am i correct is saying that we should redirect our old domain to our new one. I have read that even with 301 redirects that we could suffer a drop in SERPS - is this correct?

Yes, even with a 301 in place you will experience some disruption whilst the changes are indexed.

Make sure you redirect old pages to their equivalent new ones, and don't just redirect the whole domain to the homepage of the new one.

Unless you have 30 000 pages then you could be screwed. You're essentially starting from scratch if you don't redirect at least the KEY pages. But in this case you ge tthe 'link love' from the old web site wit hthe redirect.

Said because you're starting from scratch and it will be hard to build up again? I'm not sure. I just switched domains too, and my old domain ranks but my new one doesn't, so that's not a good thing.

I am up againest a wall :-) It is a management decision to re-brand and change the domain name.

Is it the advice not to change it ? we rank extremely well for all our main keywords ( very competitive keywords). I need to have my arguement ready for management so all the pro's and con's of whether to change it or not would be really really appreciated

Well, if your site is listed in google and ranked high, then that's good but if you switch domains, google is still going to list the old domain not the new one so I guess if you have it on a redirect (which is what I'm doing) it will be OK. But I'm not satisfied with that, I also want my new domain ranked so people don't think it's called something it's not.

So your new domain might rank soon, but will probably take some time to get up there, not sure how it works.

First of all well optimize your new brand website, then redirect the important pages, do good off page promotion for new brand website.
