    Canonical Tags. When to use it?

    Hi,

    I would love to know your opinions on when to use or not to use canonical tags.

    yes, I know they are just a "suggestion" for the SE

    Not sure if you are involved in bigger sites with guided navigation, search with several facets, etc...

    I am not sure whether or not to use canonical tags when users drill down by color, or size, for example.

    Should all these 3 pages carry the same canonical tag?
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory/blue
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory/green
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory/small

    all use the same tag
    rel=www.domain.com/category/subcategory

    ?

    what about in this case
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory/blue/show24perpage
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory/blue/show-all
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory/blue/show100perpage

    ?

    When you have like 5 o 6 facets users can drill down, that can produce way too many similar pages. Yes, they will be slightly different, but in the end of the day
    it's still
    www.domain.com/category/subcategory

    So isn't it a good idea to get all the SEO juice I can back to that URL?

    What do you think?

    Thanks so much

    You should definitely make sure to remove duplicate content. Either through the use of robots.txt, canonical tags or webmaster's tools, it will serve the same purpose but might give you headaches when the structure of your site grows and it looks like it already did.

    One thing you should note. The structure of the canonical tag is like that:
    <link rel="canonical" href="www.domain.com/category/subcategory" />

    The one thing I cannot understand is why your color or size parameters are incorporated in the url as get parameters? Then the links to the other subcategories also have to contain these parameters and it goes on and on. Thus the whole site will be duplicated many times. And how do you keep track of the user choices between sessions?

    It makes more sense to place them in a permanent cookie. This way there will be no duplicate problem and the overall structure of the urls and the site as a whole will be much more manageable.

    I definitely would want tailored results in serps. That's exactly what someone would search for.

    And if the pages are different, than you don't have an issue anyway.

    But do you mean you would use it to point to the parent level like I suggested?

    Thanks
