    Canonical Tag RE: Indexing URLs

    Hello,

On our review site we have category pages. One of the categories has 10 pages of results. So we have 10 pages that have different content but the same meta tags.

Inside the Google Webmaster Tools I checked the HTML suggestions. It said we have duplicate title and description tags for these pages:

    mysite.com/category?page=2
    mysite.com/category?page=3
    mysite.com/category?page=4

I was thinking of using the canonical tag on pages 2,3, and 4 pointing to the main /category page.

Would anyone recommend using the canonical tag this way?

Also, would this stop the google bot from crawling the content and links on pages 2,3, and 4?

    Any feedback is appreciated.

That is not the intended use of the tag so I would avoid it.
If you don't want Google indexing those additional pages just mark them as noindex or disallow them.
If you do want them crawled then you definitely do not want to try to tell Google that they are copies of page one.

Is it possible to add "Page 2" and so on to those pages? That's the way it is normally done.

I would avoid using the canonical, because the pages are not the same, and that would essentially be abusing the tag.

If you can't change the code to something different, then you may want to add nofollow tags to the links to those pages, or add noindex tags to the pages themselves.

These pages can have value for your site, try to look at your Google analytics reports and see if you have traffic or conversion from these pages. I met some cases before with pagination pages ranking well for long tail terms. So if this is the case, blocking it can contribute loss of traffic or possibly loss of possible conversion.

If you have some traffic from search engines from these pages, I will try to improve these pages like redoing titles, adding useful content to help conversions , etc.
