Question Can subdomain pages rank well?

Lets say that I want to build 5 websites, each one of them with about 10 pages.

They will have several themes, one will be about basketball, one about ebooks, one about dogs, etc.

Instead of buying 5 domains and hosting 5 domains, could I buy just one and put the other websites as subdomains?

For example, my domain would be called www.bitofeverything.com

I could put my basketball website in a subdomain called basketball-tips

    so it would be
    www.bitofeverything.com/basketball-tips/

Is there a good chance I could get ranked high if well optimized, or would it be better to just buy the basketball-tips.com domain and build it there?

    A subdomain looks like subdomain.domain.com

    www.domain.com/foldernamer is a subfolder

and YES both can have good PR and rank if you establish some good backlinks

Google will crawl subdomain.domain.com daily, but won't do that for www.domain.com/foldernamer.
PR is about backlinks. It doesn't matter where you place the pages.

I don't think that subdomains have the power that they enjoyed just a few months ago.

I have two subdomains that were tearing up the SERPs at that time. Now they are not ranking as well. My competitor's subdomains have suffered the same fate.

I might bring these pages into a folder because I think that they will rank better there.

So if Google crawls a subdomain daily and not a subfolder, then having a subdomain would be better correct? (especially if the content is updated on a regular basis like a forum?)

It doesnt matter which method you use really. They both can rank well depending on the optimization you employ. Google daily visits do NOT have anything to do with one method or the other. Daily visits happen by googlebot following links from outside your page pointing to it. If you have lots of IBL's (inbound links) then googlebot will find your pages on a daily basis. This has nothing to do woth ranking well, only means that changes you make show up faster.

One thing to know, google treats subdomain.domain.com as if it were its own domain.com where it treats domain.com/subfolder as part of the same website. As external IBL's are given more weight, this can help some as far as ranking goes.
