    Blog and forum commenting ?

A competitor of mine has clearly embarked on a campaign of blog and forum commenting. I know this because they have tried to comment on my blog and always attempt to put a link to thier content in the blog comment.

My personal feeling is it is all a bit spammy. But ive also noted their presence in search results. So Im guessing the links, even though low quality, have given them a bit of a boost.

Should I get involved in Blog and forum commenting for links, or is it considered a spammy practice best avoided ?

Avoid at all costs. It's spam, and it'll come back to haunt them.

Most of the links that are achieved are noindex, and nofollow, so it's not really worth any effort. In addition, Google has a pretty good database of which sites people do this on, and discount the value of the site, and thereby the link.
To the forum site owners, it's pretty much on a par with e-mail spam.

I think they haven't got any benefit from blog commenting. They must have got other links like a guest post or web 2.0 that is why their ranking increased.
People do blog commenting just to diversify their backlink profile so it looks more natural.

Blog and Forum Commenting is good and generally helps in generating quality backlinks. But I seriously doubt about the relevancy factor.

You are correct. It is spammy AF and bloggers hate this.
And they'll delete the comment usually or report it as spam.

If you want to get into forum commenting where you could leave a link, use Quora.
Use IndieHackers or Growth Hackers, but put your company link in your bio.

Whenever you're commenting on a blog post or forum, your answer should either ask a question or be helpful to the community.
Think bigger than getting links back to your website and think about building a good relationship with that blogger.
It can reap much greater rewards than ranking on Google.

    Janeoftrades has a valid point.

Most people discount blog and forum commenting but it can actually be very valuable if done effectively. If your blog comment adds something to the discussion and you are clear about what the link will be taking a person to then the comment will usually pass moderation and you will look a wise person.

Although blog commenting rarely benefits your SEO it can be an incredible traffic generator and it brings in traffic that is:
    a) your target audience
    b) already has some trust in you because of the helpful and knowledgeable info you gave in the comment.

Personally I'm all for blog and forum commenting when it is done right.

Commenting on blog and forums for getting backlinks is not the way one should take because Google has such developed algorithms that enables it to detect and devalue the links from comments easily.

Although there are several ways in which you can benefit from such a practise; you can drive traffic, earn brand recognition, build relationships, etc.

Apart from that, the reason for the presence of your competitor on search results can be due to their site's good content and white-hat SEO efforts.
