    Best Error to return

I've recently culled a large number of pages from my site (web directory) - Gone for good in an effort to improve quality over quantity.

What is the best server error? Currently using 410 gone - needless to say my Search Console shows a large amount of Not Found links.

If they are gone, they are gone, I suppose. If there's no relevant pages to redirect, I'd keep an error page (especially if those pages had no link or ranking power to redirect, there's no point in redirecting)
Everything will be ok in the end

If it's not ok, it's not the end

410 is fine...pages going away are a natural part of the web... i wouldn't worry about the GSC errors, they'll go away in time. The one thing that I would verify is that none of the links you're 401'ing have any real backlinks (non-scraper links, etc) pointing to them.
