Question Backlinks in footers

I have backlinks in the running footer of some of my clients' sites, but when I look for backlinks from them, there are no backlinks listed.

It seem that the search engines do not count backlinks in the footers when it is at the bottom of every page. Is that True?

Other then asking my clients to put a backlink in one of their pages, how would one get the backlinks on websites that I designed and developed?

Regards,
Bill

How are you looking for backlinks? If you're using Google, it's just a sampling and won't show them all.

Yes, they do count when in the footer. I have a couple sites that are in the SERPS from only having backlinks in the footers. (not very competitive keywords.) Backlinks within relevant content on a page is far better than a random link in the footer.

backlinks in footer have less impact and usually not counted in google. I agree with THE BERG.
