I am no big expert but this is what I know.

The more anchor text you have ( for example abc is your anchor text), your positioning for the keyword abc will come closer to the top.

Relevant anchor text in backlinks is very important. The anchor text helps tell the search engines, what the page is about.

When building links, it is important to have variation of anchor texts supporting the targeted keywords and not just repeat the same anchor text over and over.

It is not only about quantity. I have also tested that quality of those links are even more important. Getting links from expert sites will help a lot than bombarding a page with tons of spammy inbound links.

Anchor text in back links is very important.

Diversifying and looking natural are very important with this, now more so than ever.

Create a spread sheet with each URL and respective keyword in seperate columns. Then create columns for various one line links, contextual links and link descriptions and titles. Use these in rotation for about an hour on each combination when you do your link building.

That helps keep things natural.

The other thing that helps keep linking natural is to write great content and get people to link to it naturally.
