Backlink Competition
Any of you expert SEO's out there have tricks when you get involved in backlink wars?
I've noticed that my competition has been analyzing my backlinks via Google's "link:www.site.com" feature. The only way I can think of to get ahead is to get more backlinks than him and analyze his links. However, this is very time consuming and I was hoping there were ways to get ahead that has nearly as much weight as backlinks. Grrr...I hate how Google places so much weight on backlinks. |

I use the tool at this URL to gauge my competition: http://www.webuildpages.com/neat-o/ It shows you the pages where your competition are getting their links from plus the anchor text being used at those links. In the summary it shows you how many of these sites are using a particular keyword phrase as the anchor text too.

Quality / high PR links is a great option.... more inbound links......
There are no magic words to fight the keywords competitions right away...Or using some tecnique that might harm you and facing some penalties.. |

You can't give up on link building but meanwhile, adding quality content with carefully crafted title and description tags with well placed links from within the content to the target pages can help a lot. I actually find that easier than building links.
By the time your competitors figure out what's going on you have built a substantial number of content pages which they are going to struggle to catch up with... raz

Well, according to Google Analytics' "Marketing Summary," I am getting the majority of my organic visits from the search term link:www.mysite.com
Should I be worried? Is this normal? Also, if I recently made some article submissions, is it normal for me to suddenly jump up an entire page within a matter of days? Google hasn't registered the new backlinks with the link:www.mysite.com feature. I'm especially curious since I just lost a PR5 backlink but my SE rank increased. |

Anyone? Should I be alerted by what I found on Google Analytics?

If the majority of your natural search traffic is coming from "link:mysite.com" I'd say you have something to be concerned about, and it isn't necessarily your competitors.
It tells me that whatever you're doing for your natural search optimization, you either aren't doing enough or have made some mistakes. For the majority of traffic to come through a search like that, valid searches must be minimal... or you have a very low traffic site. Stop worrying about the competitors so much, and focus on your site. Good keyword research and high quality links... hopefully someplace other than free directories or other sites that would easily give your competitor links. If your competitors are spending that much time analyzing your links, you are likely a great source of free and easy backlinks. |
