Does it make more sense to add one unique article to each of the directories, or add all the articles to all the directories?
If I submit all the articles to all the directories, will the backlinks be counted if they are recognized as duplicate content?
Thanks in advance...

My thoughts is that this is not a good idea. If you have same content or thoughts on both versions, one of it will be filtered in GOogle and will not help in your marketing efforts.
If you add content to article directories, make sure it helps the directory, there is no point of adding similar articles just for the sake of having link. It is a form of spam.
Backlinks can only be counted if google thinks it is a legitimate source. In your case, if you have many versions and your plan to increase backlinks, then it is a manipulation of their system which is not good. This means, your backlinks are most likely devalued and will not help again in your marketing efforts.
What is essential is to have a single unique content with backlink to your site. Make the link age over time and it will help both traffic and rankings.having duplicates is not advisable.
