Any thoughts to why a homepage is ranking better than a targeted landing page

Here's what happened, at one point the subpage which was the landing page for a certain keyword ranked very well, consistently ranking either first or second. Then all of a sudden its ranking plummeted, and now the homepage ranks above it, though not on the first page.

What can cause this switch and drop?

could be a variety of reasons including but not limited to:

non-unique content on the landing page
backlinks to the landing page have been devalued
it could be a temporary drop and it may be back in no time

Need a lot more info than this.

    When did it drop?

Have you made any changes to your site?

Any messages in your webmaster tools account?

I could guess at what the problem is but that wouldn't do you much good now would it

No changes were made to the homepage, there were a lot of pages targeting the same keyword with similar urls and meta titles. I've since removed those pages and put in 301s. The initial drop occurred about a month ago, after clearing up some duplicates it jumped back into the top 10 but dropped again after a few days and hasn't returned. I also have a lot of high quality contextual links pointing to the landing page with balanced use of anchors.

    No messages in Google webmaster.

    thanks

Please check the target keywords and the keywords density of that page which you are targeting.

id check the anchor text to inner page, gut feeling is that you have over optimised the link building to that page.

If you have very targeted anchor text with no variation I would be concerned.

if you havent worked it out you need to go spend a long time reading these forums.

ill give you a little hint:

Keyword Density is about as useful as an inflatable dart board.

Write good content, who cares how often you see a keyword.

Now im no expert as seo but jees this topic must have raised like a 100 threads with the experts shooting down the methods many of times and giving reasons why.....

I sincerley hope you dont offer seo services...
