Anchor diversity, using a 4th word + 3 word keyword

    Hello,
This is a very punctual question and I hope you can help.

Lets say I want to rank high for "cheap blue widgets"

Using google adwords keyword tools and wordtracker, for "cheap blue widgets" i cant find other keyword ideeas.
For example: really cheap blue widgets - 0 searches
extremly cheap blue widgets - o searches

I want to diversify anchors and not use cheap blue widgets as my only anchor.

Q1. Should I use anchors like "really cheap blue widgets" even tho wordtracker, google tells me no one searches for this exact term? THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DO

Q2. Is it ok to mix up the anchors words? like blue cheap widgets?

Q3. Should i use similar anchors like "afortable cheap widgets", "human cheap widgets"?. I don-t have a chance in hell to rank for "cheap widgets", so keep in mind that when you answer.

    TY!

What do you think would happen if most of your anchors were your domain name or something that most SEO think is wasted?

If you look at the anchor text of a very high quality site with a natural backlink profile you will find very few backlinks that are keyword optimized.

If I was google the power formula would have the percentage of non-keyword backlinks in the numerator and the percentage of keyword backlinks in the denominator.

SEOs who lack restraint would shoot themselves in the foot.

Google's free keyword tool isn't going to get you anywhere in this exercise. Your should probably try www.hittail.com and find out what the real long tail keywords are.

Your external anchor text might be less important than you think if you create compelling content using a Wordpress blog that had the All In One SEO plug in. You can rank very quickly for long tail search terms without any external links pointing into your site.

You might also want to run an adwords campaign and tie it into your G. Analytics and track the phrases that convert the best (3 - 4) word phrases and start building linkable content from there.

Personally, I would go with option 1 (your first thought). I'm a fan of mixing up the anchor text in that way and the Google keyword tool only provides estimates.

You might also consider anchors that Google feels are semantically related to your keywords.

For Cheap athletic shoes enter ~Cheap (with the tilde) into Google and find a keyword that Google feels is semantically related, like Discount, repeat with athletic and shoes and you might end up with Discount Sports Footwear

Now use that as your anchor and the gazillion variations. With all that said, the best answer in this thread is from Egol and Europa

The whole point of SEO is to go after keywords that have search traffic.

If you get ranked for a phrase that has no traffic, then what is the point?

Do some research to find related keyphrases to your business that have at least a couple thousand type ins per month and target those instead. That way, when you do get ranked for these phrases you will actually see some targeted traffic from the search engines instead of wasting your efforts going for keyphrases with no traffic.

I am on the same wavelength... just elaborate this for OP.

I have been doing this since long time. After span of time my category/tags pages naturally rank higher for many long tails. These long tails can be noticed in GA and GWT. This will look like you are filling relevant contents in to the cylinder, more and more filling make your blog as hub of relevant contents which is very strong and can give healthy competition to individual without any external linking efforts. Tagging and categorize is the key thing.

Egol, I create backlinks using anchor texts like "click here", "visit", "visit website", "for more information", domain itself etc to make my backlink profile more natural.

on top of that I emphasis more on nofollow links because as its definition says it won't pass any link juice to linked page so passively it is used for non promotion. It won't add any value to linked page in terms of SERP. So is it correct approach?

Please advise if I miss something. I feel really glad if you will give more insight. Thank you
