    ALT text no longer counts

I posted this as a reply to another message, but I think it's worth restating here - since the last update, the ALT text for images no longer counts when matching search terms in the normal Google search (it still counts for the image search).

Before the update, the ALT text only counted when the image formed part of a link, now it doesn't count at all.

OK, but as we don't know what is going to count after the latest update there is no point in changing these yet.

I'll take your word for it Gringo, thanks. I'll downplay their role in the tutorial but wont take them out altogether.

It's good to know what going on, even if it's to do with the less important algo changes.

Gringo - Do you wait for your "test pages" to be Deep Crawled or can they be done with the FreshBOT ?

I will also take your word for it but logically, how does Google read a graphic navigation.

i mean, with text name, it knows that the "about us" is call the about us page.

But with graphic nav, without alt text, it wont know the about us is about us.

unless it reads the URL, which might be about.html or something else. And we know Google doesn't put much emphasis on that.

    See where I am going?

I trust that your right. But why would Google do this?

I think for image links you will find the alt attribute has been superceded by the title attribute, at least for Google. General opinion now is that alt is out and title attribute is in. Text links btw. have been noticed to also benefit from the use of the title attribute.
    eg.
    Code:
    <a title="SEO Forum" href="http://www.seochat.com">SEO Forum</a>

i dont believe the "title=" tag works the same as the "alt=" for an image. i tried to see if the "title=" worked on images and it dosn't at least not visibley (no text popup) seems to me that "title=" is for text links and "alt=" is for images.

Title attribute will only work on IE 5+ and Netscape 6+. You certainly should see a text description on hover on any of those browsers.
