Allinurl, site -site, link:, what's the difference?

As far as I know, there are several ways to find sites that link to your site, but it is very difficult. I am having a hard time, because I want to figure out why I'm ranked so low for the site www.avatarfinancial.com on Google (I'm also slipping at Yahoo & MSN, but all I do all day is link-build! aaghh!).

Here are the different types of searches I've been using (on Google):

    AllinURL:www.avatarfinancial.com | 224 results

    AvatarFinancial.com -site:www.avatarfinancial.com | 198 results

    Link:www.avatarfinancial.com | 23 results

    "avatarfinancial.com" | 229

At Yahoo, I can also use some of these:

    link:http://www.avatarfinancial.com | about 50 results

    "avatarfinancial.com" -site:www.avatarfinancial.com | about 33 results

From this, I learn a couple of things

#1 Yahoo does not index as many pages as quickly as Google
#2 Google does not index pages as fast as I post to them (I know of at least 40 other links, including one at DMOZ that Google doesn't show)
#3 I need to do a lot more link building, as my competition has three times this number

    My questions:

    A. What are the differences between the types of searches I performed above - what does allinurl mean vs. link:site vs. site - site:site, etc.
    B. Is there a more reliable way to track links online? I've heard people say alltheweb.com, but their numbers are worse than Google & Yahoo (except links, Google shows no links)
    C. Are there other commands that can be used in Google, Yahoo, other SEs to see more information?

    Thanks!
