Affliate link Masking questions
First off forgive me if I sound like a noob on these questions but I have to ask.
1. If I am masking an affiliate link lets say mydomain.com/go/shortname which accesses a php file and is redirected to an affiliate link is that considered black hat or anything... just trying to get away from having crazy affilate code urls in my links
2. Is it better for SEO in any way, there seems to be big debate on this in my searches
3. When you set the alt tag or title tag on the new shortname url link who gets the alt juice since it is going to my site internally first, how does google figure that out?

Using an internal redirect is not frowned upon at all. In fact it is good practice. When linking to an affiliate I always use a redirect script so I can log the click in my own database before sending it on. That way I can keep track of my own link stats in case there is any discrepancy.
On the link juice question I dont know I'm afraid. But would be interested if anyone knows?

The juice would all depend on how the redirect is delivered. If once you get to that page, you are 301'd somewhere else, then they would get it.
If it is redirected through some abitrary script that is unnoticeable in a text browser such as Lynx, then you'll keep the juice.
But if you do "keep" the juice, then it's going to be on a redirect page that technically doesn't exist for users, as once they hit it, they're immediately thrown somewhere else. Then if you try and hide a link in that page to your own site, that users will not ever see, you are getting into hiding things and going down a shady path.
This is all speculation - I haven't any current experience in this regard, but makes logical sense (to me at least )

cool thanks for the thoughts, that makes sense and I really dont want to be going down a shady path in any case, hence the questions here. Food for thought, thanks
