Advantage of Text Header vs. Image Header

Obviously an image banner should be more appealing, and is more flexible. However, I heard that large font header's (also <h1>), whereas an image header would have an <h1> alt""</h1>.

I'm really debating so I'd be interested in hearing your opinion!

If I look around, I see most sites using image headers (like seomoz etc.)

    Thanks!

from SEO prospective, Text header is better than image header (banner) because Google can't read image whereas it can read the text without any hassle. also note that header text has better impact compare to alt tags. so Drill this in your mind that there is vast difference in both the things.

    Holy god.

People... What is this obsession with sacrificing VISUAL appeal and BRANDING for stupid small point on page SEO aspects?

Why would you change how your site looks, your logo or brand just for a H1 tag or extra text?

Just go with what looks good and build good backlinks. Jesus...

yeah absolutely, banner is only section that noticed initially and more often by users. Hence it should be appealing, catchy. though I am not expert coder but jquery can be used to get advantage of both text and graphic.

The web has moved forward! It's pretty simple to have an attractive header using CSS, with text styled to look as good as most photoshop mock ups. With css3 properties like @fontface, text shadow, border radius etc. I'd look at how your coding as there is no reason not to have a natrual structure and an attractive site.

It is now common for categories along the top of a site to be CSS styled text. However the all powerful upper left corner is almost always the companies logo.
Since people spend 99.999999% of their time online on sites that are NOT yours, I strongly recommend you stick to that if you want to look professional.

If you want to use images for the entire 'header' that is fine too.
The first paragraph header on the page can be the H1.

Look to your site design and content for conversions. If you then focus on your backlink profile... you win.

Bottomline: screw the search engines... Impress your readers and them that award/give backlinks. Search engines do not give backlinks, they only recognize them.

Absolutely! Human visitors buy your products - not search engine spiders! Linking and off-page factors are what counts in the rankings!

    My synopsis:

    On-page focus: Humans
Off-page (linking) focus, primarily: Search engines
