Adding links into existing articles

You have a decent blog with quite good PR and good traffic. Then you add a link or two into an older (week, month old - doesn't matter) article and change few words so the desired keyword is easier to put in.

Is this something Google can frown upon?

I would say it depends who/what you're adding links to.

OK, I admin that this something Google can frown upon isn't the right kind of question.

The question should be - would Google consider such action as some attempts to cheat and possibly penalize one or both pages or is this relatively safe?

We are talking about sites (the linking and linking-to site) with clean backlink profile and sites that aren't sandboxed and rank well in Google.

Unless you are talking about reciprocal linking (linking to a site and having that site link back to you) it is fine.

There is nothing wrong with deciding that a particular page on the web is relevant to some content that you already have and placing a link to that content.

Nothing wrong at all with that.

If you link to some content that is particularly poor and is black listed, then it can be detrimental, but there is nothing wrong with doing what you are proposing.
