    404's From 404's?

Hi, I'm trying to clean up a site that has some very weird errors in the Google webmaster tools page. It seems that Google has found 404 pages linked from other pages in the website, but the pages that Google sees these as being linked from are also 404 pages, they simply don't exist. Does anyone have any idea's as to what the issue may be, or what I could do to fix it.

No idea what is causing it but you can request that the url's be removed through the webmaster tools or just redirect the pages that are showing up as unfound to a similar page that actually exists.

Are you sure that you send a 404 code when a page does not exist ? You can check it with a HTTP header checker.

    My thoughts exactly Jean-Luc.

You can get into trouble when your custom error 404 page starts returning a 200 code instead of a 404 error code.

The correct implementation of a 404 error page in .htaccess is

    Code:
    # error document for a 404 error status code
    ErrorDocument 404 /error404.php
Any 404 ever encountered will be respidered if a 404 error code was not sent but a 200 instead. Further to that, any URLs that are on that page will also be followed and thos URLS might be relative URLS and thus link to man more pages that are not actually there.

Pretty soon you can have an exponential snowball effect that ha a detrimental effect due to diminishing link juice per page and less content relevance and more duplication.

Check the response code froma 404 page.

if google still has it in their index for sometime that's indicative that something somebody somewhere is linking to the page. check to see where either with link:yoursite.ca/page or in google webmaster tools.

    Right!

And furthermore, capitalise on it! Set a 301 redirect to the relevant page, or if there is not an obvious relevant page, email the web master and or just 301 redirect it to your home page.

You can take advantage of all the broken links to your site by looking at server logs and Google web master tools.
Not only do you clear up a load of 404's you get link juice where you need it!

Well, I thank you all for your suggestions, but I'm not sure you understand the problem as well as you could by seeing it, so as an example

Within Google Webmaster Tools, there are many errors like this one saying the page is 404 not found

    jatech.ca/2005/dvd_rental_websites.shtml

The page doesn't exist and it shouldn't it may of at one point, but I'm not sure, now when looking further, Google says that that page is being linked to from

    jatech.ca/2005/contact.shtml

Another page that doesn't exist. So now you can see for yourself what a mystery this is. Any idea's?

    Interesting !

I believe that Google pull these addresses from an old database. As a matter of fact, /2005/contact.shtml existed in August 2006 . You can still see it at http://web.archive.org/web/20060830015059/http://www.jatech.ca/2005/contact.shtml . When did you remove these pages ?

Well... back to the original suggestion, why not just redirect the pages or use Google's URL removal tool to get rid of them?

    Question

does anyone think that lots of errors in Webmaster Tools would hurt your sites ranking in Google?

FOr now, since Google is a bit slow, put those pages in your htaccess file and 301 redirect them until they disappear. If after a month the errors disappear, you take down the 301s and the errors come back, then they are linked elsewhere. Simple solution. 301 in this case would be slighty better unless the content was damaging.
