SD
there was a post by the owner of the site recently saying he wrote to google and explained the experiment and they took away the penalty.

The site does not rank well for "user focused solutions" or "user focused" which it did rank well for prior to the experiement. It does rank #1 again for the site name and all of the variations my clients would search for (which is all I really care about with that site).
It is not possible to say whether the drop in ranking for the original 2 terms is still related to a penalty, lack of trust or simply an algorythm change (there has been plenty since the experiment started many months ago.
I am pretty certain that some filter or penalty got triggered by the experiment though, which caused the site (a PR5 with no history of optimization at all) to fall off the map for its domain name (a term with less than 250 results). I am also pretty certain my reinclusion request (which included a detailed explanation of the experiment and a link to this thread) triggered the release of that filter or penalty, though it could have been coicidence I suppose. It might have been a penalty on a timer (Matt C has stated that such things exist) and the time just ran out.
In any case, the experiment has changed my thinking on agressive link building being unable to harm you. I still think it is very unlikely except in extreme cases (which this experiment certainly was - increasing a 4+ year old's backlinks 1,000 fold over night, from 1,000s of sites all with the same anchor text, all changing to the same new anchor text at the same time), but I am convinced it can and does happen.

That should suffice for the experiment. This site has never done any type of link campaign and is over 4 years old. The site is www.4DiSolutions.com.
I have a site which I think this has happened to. I would like to talk with the moderator personally though.

well i removed my link vault links 12 months ago approx - for some i notified Google which ones i point link vaulkt to this too hoping to removing any possible penalty
some i didn't notify google
the ones i notified google about are still screwed
the ones i didn't notify - things reversed and are ok
the moral of the story - don't tell google - just slip under the radar
it also begs the question if i pointed link vault sites to a competitors site then told google i was doing this and later removed them would it screw them - google has no confirmation regarding site ownership from their reinclusion request form

TOLD u SO
Well ... i remember years ago all the skeptics here who said NO WAY google bowling can work ... and eventually even MATT CUTS at google admited that I WAS RIGHT ....
http://www.threadwatch.org/node/16021
***
Matt Cutts, a senior software engineer for Google, says that piling links onto a competitor's site to reduce its search rank isn't impossible, but it's extremely difficult."
***
Just wanted to COMPLETE this thread with this AUTHORITATIVE conclusion
Bear in mind ...
A) FIRST GOOGLE SAID " this was IMPOSSIBLE" ... THEN they said
B) this happenned accidentally but they FIXED IT ....
c) later thay admitted it could still be done but it was "extremely difficult"
I want to make this FINAL OBSERVATION ... because there are TWO THINGS this THREAD PROVES with 100% CERTAINTY ...
First, you can NOT BELIEVE what google tells you ... I am sorry, but they proved they are NOT BEYOND PUBLISHING BLATENTLT FALSE STATEMENTS .... so how can you ever TRUST their guidance?
Second, you can ALWAYS TRUST JOEBOB
Enjoy
